Barry describes Pro2Serve as a technical and engineering service firm. Barry had started at one of the largest engineering firms, SAIC, which was a company that would often spin off other companies. After leaving SAIC, Barry became the Batelle’s first ever Marketing VP. In that role he came to understand the importance of being a half step ahead of the market in order to be the market leader. Another key learning that Barry shared came from the book Built to Last by Jim Collins. He learned that successful companies have values that never change, but markets that always change.
One of the core values of Pro2Serve is putting 10% of the profits aside to support charities. Barry said that putting the core values into the company’s bylaws makes them real and ensures they are carried out.
Pro2Serve’s core competency is engineering and some of its major industries include national security, environmental management, and nuclear security (weapons, waste, and energy). Barry believes it’s important to hire good people. He has done this at Pro2Serve through networking and ensuring that the candidates’ values match the company’s values.
