Terry Douglas, Provision

“I want to die with my boots on.” ~Terry Douglas.

Terry Douglas introduced himself by demonstrating an insightful activity to increase self awareness. He looked at his life by decades and classified each decade with a theme or defining event. In those decades he looked at how he developed in different areas and what conditions affected him. The different topics he observed included: spirituality, family, villains/heroes, challenges, strengths, weaknesses, threats, opportunities, and turning points. This introduction by Terry showed his desire to lead a balanced life which is also reflected in how he runs his business.

Terry’s business, Provision is divided into two major segments-for profit and non-profit and both are focused in the healthcare industry. One major endeavor of the non-profit side is called HaiteServe. This organization serves offers Haiti by offering support to healthcare clinics, small businesses (microfinance), construction, orphanages, and church partnerships. There are also several organizations within the for profit segment, including East Tennessee Health Center (ETHC) and Proton Therapy. ETHC is a cancer center and Proton Therapy is one of only 7 U.S. most highly advanced cancer treatment centers.

Terry started Provision with the resources from exiting his previous business CTI which was bought by Siemens. CTI’s major competitive advantage was to focus on the entire PET process. Their products included scanners, cyclotrons, services, and detector materials. By 2006 CTI had captured 40% market share in PET imaging. It had gone from $700 million in revenues in 2002 to $3 billion in 2006. The early turning point of the company had occurred in 1997 when CTI’s PET scanner became FDA approved. This was a challenging process because the FDA had never approved a device like that.

Terry demonstrated that he is a hard worker and believes that his most productive time will be in his 60’s and second most productive in his 70’s. He strives for excellence in every facet of his life and businesses.
